The Highwaymen Artists were a loose association of 26 black artists from Ft. Pierce, Florida. From the 1950s to 1970 they created Florida landscape Paintings and sold approximately 200,000 of them from the trunks of their cars. Their Leader was Alfred Hair, who learned some techniques from the Famous Florida Artist, AE Backus. Alfred mass produced paintings and sold them in a way which Harold Newton was doing.   Harold Newton is considered the Original Highwaymen because he was selling his paintings along the roadways first.  Harold Newton taught his style to his brothers Sam Newton & Lemuel Newton.  If it wasn't for AE Backus, there wouldn't be any Highwaymen or Highwaymen Style Painters. AE Backus taught and influenced many other Artists throughout the region and these artists works are highly collectible.
