The Highwaymen Artists were a loose association of 26 black artists from Ft. Pierce, Florida. Mostly from the 1950s to 1970's. (And some still today).  They created Florida landscape Paintings and sold approximately 200,000 of them from the trunks of their cars. They mostly sold the paintings on the east coast, central Florida area.  Their Leader was Alfred Hair, who learned some techniques from the Famous Florida Artist, AE Backus. Alfred mass produced paintings and sold them in a way which Harold Newton was already doing.   Harold Newton is considered the Original Highwaymen because he was selling his paintings along the roadways first.  Harold Newton taught his style to his brothers Sam Newton & Lemuel Newton.  If it wasn't for AE Backus, there wouldn't be any Highwaymen or Highwaymen Style Painters. AE Backus taught and influenced many other Artists throughout the region and these artists works are highly collectible.
